Tibetan Spaniel Breed Information

Small in size, but packing quite a personality punch – that’s the Tibetan Spaniel for you. These dogs are loved for their bright, active, alert, and confident personality.

If you are interested in bringing home a Tibetan Spaniel puppy, here’s some important information about this breed that you should know.

In terms of size, Tibetan Spaniels are small, standing around 10 inches tall and weighing under 15 pounds. The average lifespan of a Tibetan Spaniel is 12-15 years. Tibbies have a characteristic lion’s mane and blunt muzzle with deeply expressive eyes and an elegant plumed tail. They look more like Lhasa Apsos, Pugs, and other Tibetan breeds rather than the typical western spaniels.

Personality wise, Tibetan Spaniels are intelligent and playful companions who can be frisky and curious. They are very affectionate with family members and do exceptionally well with young kids. They get along reasonably well with other dogs too.

While they are very playful and reasonably open with strangers, Tibetan Spaniels have a strong protective instinct and make excellent guard dogs. They like to watch over their family from high perches around the home.

This is an adaptable breed that can adjust to changes in routine. Tibetan Spaniels adapt very well to apartment living and are a good choice for novice dog owners. However, they are sensitive dogs and need human company to thrive and stay happy.

It is neither exceedingly challenging nor very easy to train a Tibetan Spaniel. They are eager to please and smart dogs, so anyone with even a little bit of experience training dogs should be able to handle a Tibetan Spaniel quite easily.

These dogs have moderate energy levels and mental stimulation needs. A daily walk around the block or a romp in the yard is usually sufficient. Their barking level is also moderate.

The Tibetan Spaniel’s medium length double coat does not require a lot of grooming care but can shed quite a lot throughout the year. These dogs are not heavy droolers.

All in all, the Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog that can be a great companion and watchdog. They have a sweet, attentive nature and look like little lions. Tibbies can adapt to both active and laidback families but need a lot of human attention.
