Silky Terrier Breed Information

Belonging to the AKC’s Toy Group, Silky Terriers are small dogs with big personalities. Closely related to Yorkshire Terriers, they are originally from Sydney, Australia. Silky Terriers are confident, alert, and friendly dogs that make excellent companions.

If you’re considering bringing home a Silky Terrier, here’s some important breed information you should know.

In terms of size, Silky Terriers are diminutive, standing just 9-10 inches tall and weighing around 10 pounds. The average Silky Terrier will live for 13-15 years.

Silky Terriers love the company of their humans and are quite playful and very affectionate with family members. They do reasonably well with young children and other dogs provided they receive early socialization as puppies.

By nature, Silky Terriers are friendly and will open up to strangers quite easily. They do, however, have a strong protective instinct and make excellent watchdogs. Silky Terriers have a strong prey drive and must be kept on leash or in a fenced yard at all times.

This is an adaptable breed that adjusts quickly to changes in routine. Silky Terriers can adapt to apartment living provided they get plenty of exercise. However, prospective owners of Silky Terriers who live in apartments should be aware of this breed’s tendency to bark which can potentially cause problems with neighbors.

This is a reasonably good choice of breed for novice pet owners. Silky Terriers tolerate warm weather quite well but do not tolerate cold weather too well.

It is relatively easy to train a Silky Terrier because this dog is smart and eager to please. A Silky Terrier needs attention, however, and prospective owners should be committed to providing it. Unlike many Toy Group dogs, this is not a lap dog, meaning a Silky needs to stay active to remain happy and healthy.

The Silky Terrier’s long, silky, glossy coat looks spectacular but requires a fair amount of grooming care with at least twice weekly brushings. The coat sheds low to moderate amounts. These dogs are not heavy droolers, however.

All in all, Silky Terriers are high spirited, alert, and active dogs with a gorgeous silky coat and keen expression.
