Scottish Terrier Dog Breed Information

Looking for a small dog that is high spirited, confident, and dignified? Meet the Scottish Terrier. Belonging to the AKC’s Terrier Group, the Scottish Terrier is a compact dog with a bright and lovable personality. The average Scottish Terrier stands around 10 inches tall and weighs around 18-22 pounds. The life expectancy for this breed is around 12 years.

Scottish Terriers are highly affectionate with family members and do reasonably well with young kids. They are not the best at getting along with other dogs in the household, but can co-exist peacefully provided they receive early training and socialization during puppyhood.

This is a breed that’s aloof towards strangers. They have a strong protective instinct and make excellent guard dogs. The Scottish Terrier is playful and adaptable to changing family situations such as schedules, activity, and noise levels, so they do well in busy families.

Training a Scottish Terrier requires some patience. This is not a very strong-willed breed but Scottish Terriers are not too eager to please either, so it does take time and gentle but firm guidance to make this dog biddable. Short training sessions of 10-15 minutes work best and you need to be creative to keep a Scottish Terrier interested in the training.

Scottish Terriers have moderate energy levels and high mental stimulation needs. You will need to work in some playtime or a good walk into their routine every day. Since this is a small breed, indoor play such as playing tug with a favorite toy is also sufficient, so they are great for apartment dwellers. A Scottish Terrier is quite vocal and can bark quite a bit.

In terms of grooming care requirements, Scottish Terriers have a medium length, wiry double coat that does shed but not a great deal. The coat should be hand stripped once a month or clipped every 6-8 weeks along with a weekly brushing to keep it tangle free. In general, Scottish Terriers are not very likely to drool excessively.

In summary, Scottish Terriers are confident, independent dogs with a strong personality and characteristic terrier looks with short legs and a beard. They are alert and active and make excellent watchdogs. Scotties can however find it difficult to coexist with other dogs.
