Papillon Dog Breed Information

This toy dog breed gets its name from the French word for butterfly, papillon, because of the unusual shape of its ears. These dogs have been depicted in artwork as far back as the 16th century and are one of the oldest toy breeds.

Papillons are energetic, obedient, alert, and friendly dogs with a happy disposition. They stand 8-11 inches tall on average and weigh around 5-10 pounds. The average lifespan of a Papillon dog is 14-16 years.

In terms of personality and family life, Papillons are very affectionate with family members and do exceptionally well with young children. They can also get along well with other dogs in the family with the proper early training and socialization.

You will find that a Papillon puppy is easy to train because she’s eager to please. These dogs have moderate to high energy levels and very high mental stimulation needs. Prospective Papillon owners should be prepared to devote some time every day keeping this dog active and mentally occupied. Another thing to keep in mind is that Papillons are very vocal and bark at just about anyone.

While protective towards family members, Papillons are quite open to strangers and very playful by nature. This a highly adaptable breed that can keep up with changing schedules, activities, and noise levels in a busy family.

In terms of grooming care, Papillons have a medium-length silky coat that sheds moderately. They require 1-2 brushings a week to keep their coat healthy. Papillons are not big droolers.

All in all, Papillons make great family pets and thrive in both warm or cold climates and with both city dwellers and country dwellers. They are upbeat, athletic, and robust, and while diminutive in size, Papillons are difficult to miss because of their characteristic butterfly shaped ears. Paps often win sporting competitions and can be taught to do a variety of tricks.
