Field Spaniel Breed Information

A sweet-natured, affectionate, and sensitive dog that’s also fun loving and loyal – that’s the Field Spaniel for you. Originally bred in England as a retriever on land and water, today a Field Spaniel is a wonderful family companion. If you are considering bringing home a Field Spaniel puppy, please read the following information. It will help you decide if this breed will be a good fit for your family.

Field Spaniels are sturdy, medium sized dogs standing 17-18 inches tall and weighing approximately 35-50 pounds. The average life expectancy of a Field Spaniel is 12-13 years.

The typical Field Spaniel is playful and highly affectionate with family members. These dogs are patient and tolerant of young kids and get along well with other dogs. This is an adaptable breed that can adjust to changes in routine but does not do well if left alone for long. Field Spaniels have a very strong wanderlust potential and must be kept on leash when outside.

Field Spaniels are quite open with strangers but still make reasonably good watchdogs. This is not a good choice of breed for apartment dwellers, however. Novice dog parents can consider a Field Spaniel. This breed does very well in hot weather and reasonably well in cold weather.

It is fairly easy to train a Field Spaniel with a reward-based approach, given that these dogs are intelligent and eager to please with a problem-solving attitude. Field Spaniels have moderate energy levels and mental stimulation needs. A romp in the yard or a walk around the block is usually sufficient. Their tendency to bark is moderate.

The Field Spaniel’s medium length smooth or wavy coat requires regular grooming but does not need to be clipped like other spaniels. The coat sheds a fair amount. These dogs are not heavy droolers.

In summary, Field Spaniels are active pooches when outdoors and fairly calm and docile when at home. They are related to Cocker Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, and Sussex Spaniels and have a sweet and sensitive nature.
