Cairn Terrier Dog Breed Information

Cairn Terriers are small terriers that originated on the Isle of Skye in Scotland where they were bred to catch rodents. They are alert, happy, playful, and active and make great family pets.

If you’re thinking about bringing a Cairn Terrier puppy home, here’s some important information about this breed to help you make the right decision.

Standing around 9-10 inches in size and weighing 13-14 pounds, these are small dogs that live for 13-15 years on average.

Cairn Terriers are affectionate and playful with family members and do reasonably well with young children and other dogs. They are moderately open to strangers and have an above-average protective nature and watchdog potential. This is a relatively adaptable breed that will take changes in routine in its stride.

A Cairn Terrier has a loud bark and can be vocal. This breed is biddable with consistent and firm training and will learn quickly. They are moderate energy dogs that need some mental stimulation to stay out of trouble, but not a great deal. Cairn Terriers adapt equally well to apartment living and country life.

The Cairn Terrier’s medium-length wiry double coat requires low to moderate grooming care and sheds moderately too. To maintain the coat, you will need to hand strip it periodically. These dogs are less likely to drool than some other breeds.

All in all, Cairn Terriers are alert, curious, intelligent dogs that like to explore and dig, given that they were bred to catch vermin. They are small and light and have shining eyes and erect ears. While small enough to be lap dogs, Cairn Terriers do love a play session in the outdoors.
