A cute, woolly-coated sporting dog that’s smart and has a sweet and friendly nature… sounds like the perfect pet? We present the Barbet. Please continue reading to learn more about this breed that was bred as a gun dog and waterfowl retriever in France.
In terms of size, Barbets are medium sized dogs, standing 19-25 inches tall and weighing 35-65 pounds. The average life expectancy of a Barbet is 12-14 years.
Barbets are very affectionate with family members and quite playful. These dogs can do reasonably well with young children and other dogs provided they receive early and proper socialization as puppies.
In terms of openness to strangers, Barbets are neither over friendly nor overly aggressive. They make reasonably good watchdogs. Barbets are not highly adaptable but can adjust to some changes in routine. This breed can live in an apartment provided you can meet the dog’s exercise needs. However, prospective owners should know that Barbets are sensitive and do not tolerate being alone. Barbets can adapt to both hot and cold climates.
Training a Barbet is not challenging. Barbets are smart, responsive, and eager to please, and therefore, relatively easy to train. They have moderate energy levels and mental stimulation needs. Barbets particularly enjoy physical activities involving water, but play sessions in the yard and long walks are also good. The barking level for this breed is moderate.
The Barbet’s medium to long wavy or curly coat requires considerable time and effort in terms of grooming care. These dogs require a full bath and must be left to air dry or given a blow dry before a trim. The coat does not shed much, however, and these dogs are not heavy droolers, either.
All in all, Barbets are sturdy water dogs that are agile and athletic and excellent swimmers. They are friendly, loyal, fun-loving, and calm. Barbets have a shaggy coat that makes them look adorable.
