Australian Terrier Breed Information

As the name implies, this is a terrier breed that originated in Australia where these dogs were bred to hunt snakes and rodents. Today, Australian Terriers are prized watchdogs and wonderful companions.

If you are interested in a brave, alert, and high-spirited canine companion, please keep reading. The Australian Terrier breed information in the following paragraphs will help you decide if this dog will be a good fit for your lifestyle.

Australian Terriers are small dogs, standing 10-11 inches high and weighing 15-20 pounds. The average lifespan of an Australian Terrier is 11-15 years.

While reasonably affectionate with family members, Australian Terriers are not overly lovey-dovey and retain some independence. They do wonderfully well with young children, however, and are tolerant and patient playmates. Australian Terriers can get along with other dogs provided they receive early socialization with different animals in a variety of settings during puppyhood. However, they do best when they’re the only pet in the household.

While very playful and quite open to strangers, Australian Terriers have a strong territorial instinct and protective nature and therefore make very good watchdogs. These dogs love to dig and have a strong prey instinct, so early training is key to ensure they are biddable and well-behaved adults. Also, Australian Terriers must be kept on leash when outside or in a fenced yard with a sturdy fence, given that they are diggers.

This is a moderately adaptable breed that can adjust to some changes in routine. Australian Terriers are ideal for families that live in apartments and are a reasonably good choice for novice pet owners. They can tolerate hot and cold weather both, hot better than cold.

Because Australian Terriers are intelligent and eager to please, they can be trained with a gentle, firm, and consistent approach and reward-based training. Prospective owners of an Australian Terrier should know, however, that this is a high-energy dog that needs to stay busy to stay happy and out of trouble. Daily play sessions or walks are ideal. Also, Australian Terriers are very vocal and can bark a lot, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Australian Terriers have a short wiry coat that is easy to groom and maintain. It is weatherproof and requires only a weekly brushing to stay matt-free. The coat does not shed much at all. These dogs are not heavy droolers, either.

All in all, an Australian Terrier fits a lot of personality into a compact size. This is a spirited, lively, confident, and upbeat companion with plenty of that famous terrier grit.
