Interesting Facts about Dachshunds

New Yorkers should know that Dachshunds come in a variety of coat types. And the coat type can actually predict the dog’s temperament. In general, long-haired Dachshunds tend to be quieter than their wire-haired and short-haired cousins.

New York families thinking about bringing a Dachshund puppy home may be interested to know how the breed originated. Dachshunds were bred in Germany in the Middle Ages to flush out badgers, for which short legs were ideal. The name Dachshund comes from Dachs (which is German for badger) and Hund (which is German for dog).

FAQ about Dachshunds

Which Dachshunds are calmest?

Long-haired Dachshunds tend to be calmer than their wire-haired cousins who have terrier blood in them. Smooth coated Dachshunds fall somewhere in between the long haired and wired haired ones in terms of temperament and personality.

Is a Dachshund a good pet?

Dachshunds make great family pets. They are loyal companions and adapt well to city living. Despite their size, Dachshunds are very brave (to the point of rashness), often taking on much bigger dogs.

Are boy or girl Dachshunds better?

Every dog is different, but in general, many people say that male Dachshunds are more affectionate and playful while female Dachshunds tend to be more reserved and independent.

Bonnie Ball is from Hamburg, New York and breeds Standard Poodles and Mini Dachshunds.     www.fluffypuppy.net I have been breeding healthy Standard Poodles with wonderful temperaments for over 27 years.  I am a small breeder; I do not own a "kennel."  Our Poodles and most of our Dachshunds are American and Canadian Champions with their genetic health testings done (and puppies are guaranteed). My Dachshunds are purebred, they look like a purebred Dachshund, not some mix bred with no AKC papers. I register the new puppy with AKC in owners name as soon as they give me copies of spay/neuter papers. You won't find many breeders doing that. I start house breaking right from 6 weeks old, my puppies wait for me to take them out side! My dachshunds have long ears (like they should) with nice top lines (Backs) so they won't have back problems. When you buy one of my dachshunds you will be back to get another one! Our Poodles make peoples' heads turn. They not only have spectacular temperaments but they are spectacular looking. Our Poodles do very well with children and with the elderly (many have become therapy dogs). Our Poodles have also been used as hunting dogs, taking them back to their original purpose as German hunting dogs.  In addition to Standard Poodles, I have had Mini Dachshunds for all of my life.  I selectively (about 2 litters/year) breed Dachshunds which began 19 yrs ago when my 17 year old died dachshund died (my heart broke).  AKC proudly supports dedicated and responsible breeders, like me.  Desjardins invites visitors to see the puppies, their parents, and our home.

Dachshund

I grew up in upstate New York on a farm. I was 4 when I got my first dog "Pepper" and it seemed every lost or stray dog showed up on our farm. I intended to be a veterinarian but started a small kennel when I was 19. And soon became a dog groomer, and did boarding which rounded out my life.Over the years I worked and learned from vets, other groomers and home courses , and seminars. I now have Pembroke Welsh Corgi., West Highland white terriers, and the breed I started with in 1969, Mini Dachshunds. I believe if you take care of the dogs they take care of you, I breed for quality not quantity. I still do some boarding and grooming. Still go to seminars and still love what I'm doing . And most of all still love my dogs. I have many references and repeat friends who come back when ready for another new companion. AKC proudly supports dedicated and responsible breeders. We encourage all prospective puppy owners to do their research and be prepared with questions to ask the breeder. Make sure you are not only choosing the right breed for you, but also that you’re getting it from the right individual.
