Given the Chow Chow’s thick coat, this breed is especially well suited to the Michigan climate. However, there are some things you should know if you’re looking for Chow Chow puppies in Michigan.
This is not a highly social or friendly breed. Chow Chows tend to be aloof with strangers and can be aggressive towards other dogs. However, Chow Chows are loyal and devoted towards their family members. This is not surprising, given that they were originally bred in China for hunting, cart pulling, and as guard dogs for livestock and homes.
Chow Chows are 18-19 inches in height on average and weigh around 45-70 pounds. Longevity is around 10-12 years, so you can expect to enjoy at least a decade of companionship with your Chow Chow in Michigan.
The brachycephalic (squashed) face, upright ears, and droopy eyes give this dog its characteristic appearance. But the Chow Chow’s medium length double coat has high grooming needs, as do the body folds. You will need to brush the coat daily to keep it free of matting and tangles. You’ll also need to clean the facial folds which can trap dirt and debris. On the plus side, the coat is thick and will protect your Chow Chow from the cold weather in Michigan.
Chow Chows are great for individuals and families in Michigan that are laid back. They don’t have big exercise needs or social interaction needs and can be quite independent. This makes Chow Chows ideal for urban dwellers and apartment dwellers in Michigan. Also, they have a low barking tendency. However, the Chow Chow’s tendency to snore and drool is moderate to high.
